Rajinder Nagar Remembers: Candlelight March Honors Students Lost in Rau’s IAS Tragedy – A Call for Safer Future

A Night of Solidarity: 1000+ Aspirants Pay Tribute, Demand Accountability

One year ago, Old Rajinder Nagar witnessed a tragedy that shook the UPSC community to its core. On 27th July 2024, three young aspirants lost their lives in a horrific incident at Rau’s IAS Study Circle due to severe waterlogging and negligence in basement infrastructure. Their dreams were cut short, but their memory ignited a movement for change.

Last evening, on 27th July 2025 at 7:30 PM, the entire student community came together for a powerful candlelight march to honor the departed souls and renew the demand for safer coaching hubs. Over 1000 aspirants, dressed in white, walked silently from Rau’s IAS to Patel Nagar Metro Station, holding placards that read:

“हमने सपने खोए हैं, अब और नहीं!”
“Safety First, Profits Later!”
“Never Again – Fix Our Infrastructure Now!”

Key Moments from the Memorial

1. The Silent Procession

  • The march began at 7:30 PM sharp, with students holding candles and photos of the victims:

    • Nevin Delvin– Dreamed of becoming an IPS officer

    • Shreya Yadav – Aspiring Student

    • Tanya Soni – A topper of upsc

    • Nilesh Rai – Dreamed of becoming an IAS officer

2. Police Administration’s Support

  • In a rare show of solidarity, the Delhi Police deployed a heavy contingent to ensure a peaceful march.

3. INSAF’s 4-Point Charter

At the culmination point, INSAF representatives presented demands to authorities:

  1. Mandatory safety audits of all coaching center buildings (basements banned for classes).

  2. Emergency exits and flood-proofing for all hostels/PGs.

  3. Fast-track compensation for victims’ families.

  4. Monthly grievance meetings with SDM and police.

What’s Next?

  • Legal Action: INSAF is filing a PIL for stricter enforcement of the Coaching Centers (Safety) Act.
